Comparison of Double Glazing Types

Early double glazing, common before the 2000s, consisted of two panes of glass separated by an air-filled gap. While a significant improvement over single glazing, these basic units offered only limited thermal insulation.

From the early 2000s onwards, the industry saw major advances in energy efficiency. Manufacturers began using inert gas fills (such as argon) between the panes and applying soft-coat low-emissivity (Low-E) coatings to the glass. These enhancements significantly reduced heat loss, allowing modern units to meet strict U-value targets and building regulations.

Today’s double glazing is far more effective than earlier versions, thanks to continual improvements in materials and manufacturing standards.

For those seeking even greater performance, secondary glazing can be added. This involves fitting an additional glazed layer to an existing window or double-glazed unit, creating a triple-layered system. It’s a practical and cost-effective way to boost warmth, improve sound insulation, and enhance energy efficiency—especially in older or heritage properties.
